Have you ever watched a photo or a video on social media and wondered, "Why am I seeing that?" Have you ever read some news online and pondered, "What’s the meaning of this?" Then, it is with great pleasure that I announce to you, my dear readers, the equation that many have tried to crack for years. It is the mathematical rule of importance, and it’s as simple and clear as this: V = n + 1. Please allow me to elaborate.
Let’s start with the basics. V stands for "value". Don’t forget that this rule actually tries to prove what’s of significance. After that, we have the "n". This one stands for every possible form of common entity such as a human being, a city, a country, etc. It can be as little as a single individual and as big as any other type of social formation. That’s followed by a "+ 1". This one goes to the exact same form as the "n" that is before that. It’s really not that hard to understand, is it?
If not, a couple of examples will surely clear things up. A pet is valuable because at least the pet itself + its owner thinks of it as important. If there is no owner, the pet itself ends up in the streets, gets sick, and, sadly, dies young.
Now, let’s say that you share on Facebook a picture with your baby, strolling in the park with joy. This is important for you but indifferent to anyone else on earth, so it has no value and you should not post that. This doesn’t change even if it gets a thousand likes as there are plenty of reasons why someone would hit the "like" button. However, if there is at least one more person that would truly consider it important to see that picture – to the exact same extent of importance as it is to you, the "n" of the equation – then, by all means, go ahead and post it.
To test if the rule is valid, I applied it to bigger numbers as well, and it fits. For instance, in Greece, we have some pretty odd traditions, and they are slowly wearing off. Why? Because no other country cares about them. Plenty of Greeks don't care about them as well. On the contrary, American traditions have started to kick in by far, lately. There are more and more people here who would celebrate Halloween each year; some are even celebrating Thanksgiving.
The American culture itself is proof of the equation as it’s become revered in more countries globally, whereas other minor cultures are slowly heading to their demise like many others did before them. I don’t know if you get it, but I just analyzed to you why globalization got established and why it will never perish. The same goes to capitalism.
Think about how much time you’ve spent on things, projects, or beings that aren’t actually important. Not anymore! Now you know the solution to one of humanity's greater problems: V = n + 1! Imagine how much different life would be if you focus only on the significant things. Well, there you have it!
Vice versa, now that you know the rule, please respect it. Don’t make me do the math. Just be honest with yourself and realize what’s essentially of value before showing it to the crowd. Otherwise, for the love of humanity, don’t work on it. You’re vainly wasting someone else’s internet data, energy, time, spiritual effort, etc. for no reason other than your naive self-centered pseudo-reality.
To conclude, even if you post a bad comment about this article, there is still value in it because you took the time to write a comment because you thought that this article was important enough for you to make that comment. So, be my "+ 1", I’m waiting for you!
